First signs that the holidays are around the corner, an amaryllis and a hyacinth. I love them at this bud stage, much more than when they’re in bloom actually. Considering the warm weather we’ve had over the weekend you wouldn’t know advent is approaching in just a couple of weeks. The sun was shining and I raked the last of the leaves bare feet in my Birkenstocks without a jacket on. The holiday lights are going up later today too as it does get dark really early now. Sun rises at 7.50 am and sets at 3.20 pm.
Have a good week!
Good morning! I'm the opposite ... Love them both when they're in bloom especially the hyacinth and its' fragrance. Why is it though, that one bulb is in dirt and the other is not? Love flowers and plants but I'm not a Gardner at all (first sighting of creepy crawlers and shovel goes one way and Sandy runs the other. Eww ..... blah! ). Hyacinth I believe come back every year right?
Have a good day!
PS - I see cute Mini is chilling in the cool kittie bed. Love that!

Sandy - They both come potted but I rinsed off the soil from the hyacinth becaue I love the look of the roots in the clear water. I've done it with amaryllises too in the past but they tend to become top heavy and fall over once they start growing which is why I've kept that one potted. I might still do a soilless one in a taller wider vase later on though.

Wow, 3:20? And I thought 4:45 was early for us!
You can plant them in pea gravel alo and that looks pretty cool.

Alltså det är något med den där gröna färgen som just bara hyacinter och amaryllisar har! Så vackert. Och får mig att tänka på våren, vilket dock är snudd på tortyr så här i mörkaste november...

Benita, do you know any trick to prevent the amaryllis or hyacinth from growing crooked?

Stephanie - Keep rotating them every day so not the same side faces the light all the time. Should do the trick.

Benita, where can I get those glass containers ( sorry don't know the name for it) where the hyacinth is?
Am I in time to 'force' the amaryllis and hyacinth in time for Xmas/ New Year

I got mine at the local flea market :).
The hyacinths and amaryllises are alredy forced I believe, so the minute you take them inside they start frowing pretty fast. The hyacinth will probably bloom within a week and last another and the Amaryllis will probably bloom around mid December I should think. I'll be switching out the hyacinths several times before Christmas.
