Our Old Apartment

I got an e-mail from Martin saying our old apartment is for sale! It’s where Martin and I lived for a few years and where we had Wille.
I really like what they’ve done to the place since we moved back in 1995. It’s so much more modernized. We still had a marble kitchen sink (sounds lovely but the sink was tiny), a deadly gas stove which got red hot (the entire thing) when you had the oven on and the oven itself was itty bitty so you could only ever do half a recipe of anything. I love that they opened up the window into a door (something we would also have done had we stayed) and that they kept the glass pantry door that Martin and I dug out of a dumpster ca 1992. As a matter of fact they kept a lot of the original cabinets and shelves which is nice to see. The rest of the apartment looks a bit odd. They split a not very big room to begin with into two and I can only imagine how cramped that must be IRL although it looks quite spacious in the realtors photos.

Oh, and price wise, we paid 575 000 SEK back in 1989 and sold for 425 000 in 1995 making a loss (but gaining a nice big rental instead). Today’s price 3 795 000 SEK. Yeah.

A house we lived in and would have liked to buy years ago (they wouldn't sell) has just been completely renovated, which has been very interesting to see as we pass there about once a week ;o.

I like the opened kitchen too, it's a good idea ! I have quite the same thing for my living room, it's a pleasure to open an entire wall when the weather is fine.

Do you happen to know what kind of varnish (pigmented oil? they used to get the white/palish floor? That's the kind we wanted to use to brighten up the birch parquet.

I have been happily following your blog for two years or so and feel that you have helped me get to know a little bit about life in Sweden. I know this is off topic - I am getting the chance to visit next week for work (Stockholm University, staying at Sheraton near the main station). I am looking forward to it, but the weather gods seem to be against me and it looks like it will rain, rain, and rain. I will have sunday afternoon and all day wednesday to explore and am wondering if you have any suggestions for specific stores to visit or touristy things to do in the rain?!

I was happy to recognize that stylewise, your old apartment resembles ours. My boy is just a toddler, and I hope when he get to Wille's age, we as a family will have progressed to a place that resembles more your current one … :)

Muyserin - Yes my style has evolved a bit since back then :). At the time we had no money whatsover and dumpster dove basically all our furniture and the rest were hand-me-downs. Also these photos were from right after we moved in, it slowly evolved from there and did look "tidier" when we left.

As for the table, it's quite a famous one for us over here. Had it been another one I'd probably not have known :).
