So after six months without proper chairs around the dining table and having searched for that elusive harlequin set for all of that time in the end I gave up.
Reasons for giving up:
1) Both Wille and I realized our slouchy postures while having dinner.
2) My mom is coming in a little over a month’s time and at the age of 82 she deserves to lean.
I had quite a hard time choosing what chairs to finally get but in the end went for a long time favorite, the Emeco Navy chair. I love the original aluminum version but decided to go for the recycled Coke bottle ones instead. For one because they’re a bit warmer to the touch and also because they come in white. And you know how I love white.
I’m still getting used to the different shape around the table but I’m so happy I have chairs!
Love them! So crisp...

I love the white chairs. R they difficult to maintain?

They looks great!!!!!

Simple. Classic. White. I think they are about perfect.

They look stunning, great choice.
Posted by: Hxx | November 21, 2011 at 05:06 AM
We've only had them for a week so I donät really know yet. I was surpise at the weight of them though. These are sturdy chairs. Heavy!
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 05:14 AM
Those chairs look gooooood ! Why did you decide against getting them in four different colors, to get the harlequin touch ?
Congrats on the 1 000th post ! (a bit late !)

* don't
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 05:47 AM
It crossed my mind briefly to get then in green but they're quite expensive and I knew I'd get tired of a colored set and would regret spending all that money.
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 05:49 AM
WOW, they look amazing. Very stylish but still kind of comy. Good choice! I love your blog Benita, your on my daily-morning-read-list. Have a great day, greetings from Germany.

Nice! Real nice.

Very graceful and look comfy thanks to the back support and the the slightly concave seat. Love the second photo withe the view of your kitchen in the background. I would like to pin it to my Pinterest. Hope it's OK?

Correction - the third photo, the last one in the post :-).

Great choice! I am happy that you didn't choose eames with wodden legs since they are everywhere now....I expect them to jump out next time I open my milk LOL
Posted by: jja | November 21, 2011 at 06:59 AM
Absolutely, pin away!
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 07:05 AM
I have to say I resisted them for that very reason. I do love them and they would have looked great and they were the ones I chose between in the end but like you say they are EVERYWHERE!
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 07:07 AM
Beautiful!
Posted by: Nini Tjäder | November 21, 2011 at 08:20 AM
oh, they really make the space. sometimes company coming really does push the decision-making process along! are they warm or will you make cushions? xx
Posted by: elisa | November 21, 2011 at 08:30 AM
Lovely and simply classic. Yes the eames ones are lovely but it's good to be less obvious.
Posted by: Account Deleted | November 21, 2011 at 08:36 AM
Love them! Glad you did decide against the aluminum ones.
A friend of mine has them and I always have to take a hot bath after having dinner at her place.
They are so cold!
Greetings Imke

Ja! Vad trevligt, så får du provsitta! :)
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 09:37 AM
How the heck can you afford them?! They are absurdly expensive! I would love to partake in some recycled goods but they are way out of my price range.
Posted by: Dee | November 21, 2011 at 10:05 AM
Also... I'm jealous.

After selling the old house and making a nice profit I've set aside some money for furniture. Some has been inexpensive like the IKEA kitchen and bed but I don't want my whole house to be IKEA so I splurge a little sometimes.
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 10:10 AM
They look great. When I first saw them, I wondered if they were sturdy and its good to know.
Posted by: Beatrice | November 21, 2011 at 11:34 AM
Love your new chairs! A beautiful choice.
Posted by: Mary Kay | November 21, 2011 at 11:34 AM
do you know you're the first website I check each morning and it just gives me the "get up and go" to start my day... you have done such a fab job on everything so far...you're an inspiration!
Posted by: Olivia | November 21, 2011 at 11:42 AM
Love the chairs! I've been wanting the aluminum ones for ages, but now that you mention how cold they are, I might have to switch my wish list to the recycled ones!
Posted by: Danielle | November 21, 2011 at 12:20 PM
I didn't know they made recycled ones! Love the aluminium submarine chairs but these are even better. A question; what do you put on the bottom of your furniture to prevent scraping on the wood floors? We always used felt pads that attach with a nail, but they very quickly seem to pick up dust and grit (particularly around the dining room table where milk is spilled with some regularity), and then they have the reverse effect as they are now effectively sandpaper. Any brilliant insights for alternatives?
Posted by: Anna | November 21, 2011 at 12:37 PM
Sorry, I also use the felt pads, but the adhesive ones. I occasionally vacuum the pads to get rid of the dirt and pet hairs, if that's any help to you.
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 12:51 PM
They look absolutely perfect!

The chairs are so beautiful and look great with the table.

Love, love, love these!!!!! Great choice and your comment about your mom deserving to lean just cracked me up. : ) enjoy your choice.
Posted by: norma | November 21, 2011 at 01:26 PM
oh! love your choice. the little green dish in the second picture ~ cute splash of color! i use felt pads on my furniture! in fact, i keep a "stock" of replacements handy... will your mom visit in December? does she live in another country?
Posted by: christine e-e | November 21, 2011 at 02:23 PM
They are. I want to scream every time I see them in a magazine.
Posted by: Messy | November 21, 2011 at 02:34 PM
Rumor has it Emeco used Betty Grable's derrière for the seat impression in the Navy chair design. Well, that's what the sales guy at Design Within Reach told me anyway. But how cool if it's true!
Posted by: anna | November 21, 2011 at 03:01 PM
Perfection!
Posted by: Lisa Flaherty | November 21, 2011 at 03:09 PM
You can also dress them up with fabric--seat pads, back slips, whole chair covers. I LOVE these chairs! I have some Navy chairs (wooden) that I purchased at Goodwill in Annapolis. Wish they were metal but I'm happy for what I have!
Posted by: Peggy | November 21, 2011 at 03:35 PM
Very cool. Now I can compare mine to hers!
Posted by: Carlos | November 21, 2011 at 04:30 PM
My mom lives in the south of Sweden and when she had her dog she had problems traveling with it so I'd go to see her. Now she doesn't have a dog anymore and will fly up over Christmas and New Years.

Wow va fint det blev! Snabba beslut kan bli bra beslut!
Vart kan man hitta en butik som säljer dessa? Eller har du köpt de online?
Tack för en fantastisk blogg med fina bilder och inspiration!

Last week I arrived to your blog, and in few days I've read ALL your posts. Your house has changed a lot, and it's beautiful now!! I would like to have my own house/ flat to decorate it by myself as you have done!
Really nice!
Best regards from the Basque Country! :)

They look fabulous Benita.. and actually in a relatively small space I think the uniformity works better.
Do you mind me asking how expensive 'quite expensive' is ??

Plus, they'll last you for ages! Sometimes it pays to purchase quality.

It's not "a" chair. It's when you mix a set of different chairs around a table. I was hoping to fin four to six cool different chairs at flea markets and paint them to unify them but in six months I didn't find a single one...
Posted by: Carlos | November 22, 2011 at 07:02 AM
They were SEK 2115 each. In the US the price is USD 245/chair. A bit of an investment...
Posted by: Carlos | November 22, 2011 at 07:07 AM
It is.. but they're a classic shape and you're saving the planet to boot... so it can't be bad. ;o)

hi from Greece!
Are the chairs plastic?
I mean...do they feel like these awful plastic garden chairs?
I'd say (and hope) not...considering their cost!
But they're in my wish list!
I love your blog! keep the organising posts coming!!
Posted by: calliope | November 22, 2011 at 12:17 PM
The chairs are made from recycled Coca Cola bottles so yes, they are plastic. They in no way feel like flimsy garden chairs though, these are not hollow or thin but heavy and solid :).
Posted by: Carlos | November 22, 2011 at 12:30 PM
They look great, and I particularly love the little clear bit at the bottom of the legs that makes them look that much lighter. Really good choice!
Posted by: janice | November 22, 2011 at 01:59 PM
Hey Benita, i like the chairs..
But just one remark: The date in your blog is somewhat "behind". It says it's only November. ;)
Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year!
