Holiday Loo

I was in the Get Organized for the Holidays forum at Simplify 101 this weekend and one of the things we discussed was where in your home should you decorate for the holidays.

I always say, don’t spread your décor out everywhere but instead concentrate in a few places. Those few places should in my mind be in the areas where you and others will actually be able to see and enjoy them.

 

The loo/powder room/bath room is one of those places if you ask me. What’s the one room you and your friends will see besides the living room/dining room/kitchen?

 

Yeah! It doesn’t have to be a whole lot. A few glittered birdies watching over the TP, an accidentally broken off Amaryllis and a snowflake is just enough. If you ask me.

Very pretty.. love that bird house.
I must say I had never done much in the loo before, but you're so right Benita, it is the one place all your guests see. So last year I hung some baubles from a pretty ribbon over the mirror so they'd be reflected double.
It was such a simple thing but everybody noticed..

Those are some nice ideas, also Jo's baubles. I already have plans for decorating the loo: wrapping the regular wallhangings in nice Christmassy wrapping paper. Not sure if I will add a ribbon or not. Still thinking about that.

And yes, this was also an idea from Simplify101, a combination of an idea of my own and one of the other participants.

I have a red felt "Merry Christmas" sign that I have been hanging in the powder room for the last couple of years and I always add a candle and light it. Love your snowflake.

I'd never heard of svibel but looked it up online and it's a hyacinth apparently. We call them hyacint in Sweden :).

I just decorated my loo last night as a matter of fact! I have a very small collection of Christmas wind up toys that I put on a ledge, and a pretty Christmas candle that I light every night. It makes me smile every time I go in there...

Ahh.. of course! I haven`t slept much the last week since both me and my 9 month old son have been sick, so it must be that..

We call it both Svibel and Hyasinth in Norway... I don`t know why really, it`s just confusing. BTW was it you who wrote that the white one is the type that doesn`t smell so strong? Because I have had problems dealig with the smell of it the last couple of times peaople have given me Hyasinths. But I have never had a white one... only blue and lilac. Maybe I should try a white one this Christmas.

After I bought some I noticed there was a sticker saying "no scent" or similar on the plastic pot. I guess that means there are stronger and not so strong varieties of the white ones. Someone at work also mentioned that the pink ones smell the strongest. Don't know if that's a fact or her own opinion but that would make me stay clear of the pink ones :).

I made a handout with photos and simple holiday decor ideas for the students which they could print out. I didn't teach but participated in the forum where the students could ask me questions on holiday decorating two weekends in a row and I answered and joined in the holiday fun :).

What lovely simple touches! I've never decorated the loo for xmas, not because I didn't want to, just because I never thought about doing so!Tomorrow is a public holiday here in Italy and the day we usually get the decorations out. Maybe I could change the green candle by the bath to a white one and add something glittery!! I do have to be careful though as my two cats think xmas is for them. Those little bird decorations wouldn't stand a chance! Our tree is also decorated sparingly as they like to climb that and sleep in it!! Strange cats!

I agree! I decorate the bathroom that guests will see for the holidays as well. Nothing too crazy, but a touch of the holiday cheer. Same goes for the kitchen and living room. Your decorations look lovely!

Yes, I had a pink one in my kitchen window sill once, and my other half complained until I tossed it out. It really was a strong kind of chemical smell. A friend of mine talked about how she loved how the hyacinths she had outside her front door smelled so nice whenever she went out or came home - I just couldn’t understand how she could think that it smelled good... I do love the look of it though, and I’ve always thought that the white ones are so pretty - so if they don’t smell much, I will definitely buy some tomorrow and put one in the bathroom.

Sweet. Just enough. If I added any Holiday decorations to our bathroom I could almost guarantee that our kids would either a) knock them into the toilet OR b) toss them into the (water filled) tub (HA! The joys of having a 2-yr and 4-yr old! :-))

I have a Christmasy candle (with little pine cones in it and a moose on the loo reading newspaper (a souvenir from Canada), my husband's sense of humor that is.
