Since we were on the subject of books and bookcases the other day I thought I'd show you another one of our bookcases. This IKEA Expedit is in Wille's room and houses his Harry Potter books, manga collection, DVD's, magazines, CD's etc. Basically all the stuff a teenager wants to have around. In the baskets at the bottom are software boxes, assorted cables and other stuff we (I...) don't want to see.
I love the symmetry of the cube shelves of Expedit and I also love that it's deeper than regular bookcases so there's plenty of space to display things on top. This Egyptian temple was built by Martin and Wille out of MDF after our trip to Egypt five years ago. There's Anubis, Horus and the rest of the gang.
To make best use of the deep space we added shelf raisers which we cut to size from foam core board. It's glued together with a hot gluegun. Simple and fast solution. Ours are 12 cm ( 4 3/4") tall, 18 cm (7") deep and 33 cm (13") wide.
The shelf raiser enables you to put things at double depth but are still able too see what's back there.
If you want more Expedit ideas there is a Flickr groups devoted to just that here and here you can check out photos of Expedit and other IKEA bookcases. Enjoy!
I was wondering how you did those risers!

You really make me want to buy an Expedit. It's too bad that the big one won't fit in the space where we need it. A week ago a shelf in our cheap bookshelf bought at Jysk broke down because the books on it were too heavy. I guess the next one we buy will be able to hold more weight ...
Thanks for a very good blog! Actually one of my favorites!

Thanks so much for all your comments :)
Maria, There is a smaller version than the one we have, did you know? Or maybe it's the depth that doesn't work for you?!

Benita. Oh yes, I know about the small one. But I think that one is just too small. Too bad. We have a lot of books :)

I have just discovered your blog, and embarrassingly have read all your archives, stopping only to sniff a tear that my house doesn't look like yours. You're a woman after my organisational heart, though - great work - thank you for the delicious blog!

We have done the same thing with the risers in my son's Expedit. We used the small square puzzle boxes with 60 - 100 piece puzzles he doesn't play with anymore. Two across and two up work perfect and you can't wee them with the books in front

The explosive sweetness of corn, along with a mild hint of anise, are packed into these seemingly innocuouscorrect from the get-go. To be collaborative then, is in essence a human process, that plays out over whatever modality of interaction you use with othesdfr people, be that face-to-face, email, a wiki or any other "collaborative technology".
