Some of you may remember the diningroom cabinet/closet. When we moved in ten years ago it was one of the first things I painted because it was originally a clothes closet and it felt dingy in there. We didn't have a lot of money so I used a can of paint which I had left over from a project at work. The result was clean but dark.
A little while ago Anna posted about her newly decorated pantry and I was totally inspired and decided I needed to do something to our cabinet. It's a really simple makeover apart from the fact that I had to empty everything out and that's I guess why I haven't done it sooner. All weekend long there has been stuff everywhere. All the glasses were handwashed and a lot was packed up to go to the charity shop. The fact that Martin and I took a hard look at everything and realised a lot could go felt really good.
The inside of the cabinet is nowhere nearly as nice as Anna's excellent new build and I wasn't going to rip everything out and start over so I simply went for crisp white paint for the walls and undersides of the MDF shelves and then I cut white oilcloth to size for all surfaces. If you want to do the same, make sure you get an oilcloth with a grid on the back! Mine had and it was so easy to measure and cut. I then stapled the oilcloth to the shelves so it will stay put.
I love the result. It's so light in there now and I rearranged things so the stuff we use most often is close at hand and the more rarely used inherited stuff that Martin wants to hang on to is on the top shelf.
Araceli e-mailed last night and asked about how much dinnerware, glasses, cups etc we have and the answer can be seen here. Besides from the things we use every day which is stored in the kitchen cabinets this is it. It's mostly white so if I wanted to go crazy with color when setting the table I could using colorful napkins, tablecloths etc but usually the table gets set all in white anyway. I just prefer it crisp and clean looking.
